Topsail Island is proud to be a designated Sea Turtle Sanctuary, providing a safe haven for the magnificent loggerhead sea turtles that return to our shores each year to nest. From May 1 through October 31, these gentle creatures come home to the beaches where they were born—an incredible natural cycle happening right beneath our feet.
As you explore the shoreline, you may notice turtle nests protected with orange tape. These nesting sites are vital to the survival of future generations, and with just a few simple actions, we can all help keep Topsail Island a thriving sanctuary for sea turtles.
How You Can Help Protect Our Sea Turtles
Fill in any holes before you leave the beach.
Large holes left in the sand can trap mother turtles as they crawl ashore to nest or confuse hatchlings making their journey to the ocean.
Remove litter and debris.
A clean beach means a cleaner ocean. Picking up trash—even small pieces—helps protect sea turtles and other marine life from dangerous pollution.
Turn off exterior lights at night.
Artificial lights can disorient baby turtles, causing them to crawl away from the water instead of toward the moonlit ocean. Flashlights and phone lights can also confuse hatchlings or harm their sensitive eyes, so use them sparingly and responsibly.
